Midnight Train to Memphis

Midnight Train to Memphis                           June 11, 2012

I got a hankering for some blues,
And I pawned off all of my jewels
To buy me a ticket Western bound
On the midnight train to Memphis town.
I'm craving a few licks on a Les Paul,
And Graceland, I hear, sounds like a ball.
Beale Street is a dandy old cuss,
Or so I'm told about this in a fuss.

Well, the train toots as it chugs along,
And I can just hear that sweet old song.
B.B. King is probably soaking up the Sun,
And Elvis is really so much fun.
I'm so excited; I can't hardly wait,
For the midnight train to Memphis
Is now on the slate.
Sorry, sis, but the farm's gotta wait.
I've delayed this all my life,
And I can no longer wait!

Engineer! Let that whistle blow!
Let the headlight burst into the night with its glow.
Let's head out of Knoxville for a fortnight or two,
For a song and dance and a new sight in blue.
This is the midnight train to Memphis, my friend,
And I shan't stop for any reason until the end.
I could have sailed the night sky seas,
But what about the train caboose
And the Southern breeze?
Oh, come sail with me to Memphis and be free!

Well sis, you're trying to say Memphis will always be.
You're trying to tell me that there's nothing to see,
But you forget the music and barbecue
That on me, just grew and grew.
Well, sis, just wet your whistle now.
I'm done milking that damn cow.
It's time to experience big city life.
The energy in Memphis is to be cut with a knife.

Engineer!  Let that whistle blow!
Let the headlight burst into the light with its glow.
Let's head out of Knoxville for a fortnight or two,
For a song and dance and a new sight in blue.
This is the midnight train to Memphis, my friend,
And I shan't stop for any reason until the end.
I could have sailed the night time seas,
But what about the train caboose
And the summer breeze?
Oh, come sail with me to Memphis and be free!
