On the Night I Fell in Love with You

On the Night I Fell in Love with You                     April 1, 2012

On the night I fell in love with you,
The stars must have aligned.
I looked up at the sky and saw Cassiopeia,
Then invisibly etched your patented "W" shape
Into the palm of your rosy right hand.
I proceeded to steal a kiss from you,
Pondering whether this was the gift
My Lord promised me many a moon ago.
That particular night's moon burned a hole in the sky,
And, like those old Brite Lite toys,
Radiated the pathway
From your heart to mine.

On the night I fell in love with you,
I began the evening with a stroll around the park.
Then, as I came upon a bed of red, red roses lit beneath a lantern,
A thought came to mind:
We mustn't kid ourselves anymore,
That we must forgo all false illusions of the null and void,
And that we must conjoin our hearts
Or perish as miserable beings in a vast, toxic landfill
Of wasted dreams and passions unrealized.

And on the night I fell in love with you,
God re-parted the Red Sea.
He delivered me from a bastion of the malcontents
To a land as sweet as milk and honey.
And on the night I fell in love with you,
Life began again.
Death closed its cold, clammy grasp on winter
And, born onto me like a baby chick pecking out of its shell,
Was you, for my love for you springs eternal.
