I Never Promised You Heaven

I Never Promised You Heaven                                      December 29, 2007

I never promised you a happy life.
You ask a lot, too much of me.
I never promised you a house
With a two car garage and a yard.
I never promised you Heaven,
Clear blue skies with angels flying round.
I can't give you Heaven,
But I can do for you the best that I can.

Seems these days, I'm taken for granted.
You want the moon, and that I can't give.
Appears to me that the planets
Are always in alignment
Just so you can get your way.

Well, I'm not a wealthy man.
I get by doing the best I can,
Shining a light, digging tunnels
All whilst mining coal.
I'm just a blue-collar man
And I get by as simply as I can,
Digging away for my nuggets of black gold,
And all so they can sustain you and me.

But I never promised you Heaven.
That might be in the works,
And yet be light years away.
I might be your man,
Yet still, I'm just a man,
One whose means are quite meager.
I never promised you Heaven,
But I'll do for you the best that I can.
