Little White Lies

Little White Lies                                      March 31, 2006

I saw you out there
With that other man.
You looked at me
With this puzzled stare.
I knew right then
What we had, well,
Simply wasn't to be.

You looked like a convict,
A convict of love, the worst kind.
I know you weren't really wearing them,
But those black stripes really did fit on you.
You looked like you were trying
To exonerate yourself of wrong doing.
I guess you thought you were following your heart,
Never minding what you did to mine.

I talked to you the next morn,
And you said, "It wasn't what you think,"
But all I know is what I saw.
I saw you with the handsome, hideous man,
But I had enough resolve not to fall.
I did not fall for your little white lies.
I did not fall for your treachery.
I did not fall for your deception.
I will not take you back.

Love is the most peculiar beast
I've ever tried to tame.
I tried to conquer it when I undertook you,
But all I got was a mirage.
I swear I thought I loved you,
That you also loved me back.
Alas, there we speak again of the little white lie,
But I will not cry again over you.
