Honky Tonk Spirit August 14, 2006
I never have been a fan of country.
I'm more of a rock man myself,
But at times, I have a little bit of Tennessee rise out of me,
And out flows that southern honky tonk spirit from within.
I never like the twang of the slide guiter.
I never enjoy hearing the simple bend of that fiddle string.
I always enjoy watching an old wily black man light up the night
With ol' Lucille and a cadenza that enacts feelings of shock 'n awe.
But sometimes, I get in these moods for a little boogey-woogy,
To hear a man of Jerry Lee's moxie accompany ol' Lucille,
To start a wild ride for that honky tonk spirit from within.
There ain't nothing like fine Southern music,
That blend of country and soul you can't find anywhere else.
Ol' Lucille and the ghost of Jerry Lee speak to me with wild glee,
And I'm wide-eyed like a blue-tick hound, howling at a full moon,
Riding down river on the Delta Queen, that honky tonk spirit from within.
